What statutory payroll computes
Which of PF, ESI, Professional Tax, LWF and TDS payroll works out for your business, why one may show as pending, and what each status means.
Payroll works out five statutory items: PF, ESI, Professional Tax, LWF (labour welfare fund) and Income tax (TDS).
Where to look
Go to Statutory. The card What payroll computes shows each item, with its state where it depends on a state. Each pay run shows the same card as Statutory components in this run.
What each status means
| Status | What it means |
|---|---|
| Computed | Payroll works it out |
| Computed · values use a documented default | Payroll works it out, but some values wait for official confirmation |
| Not available yet: data pending verification | Not computed until its rates are checked against the official source |
| No rates on file for this state | X has no rates for that state, so nothing is computed there |
| Not registered | Your business has no registration for it. Add one under Registrations |
| Not in your plan | Your plan does not include it |
Why some items wait
Statutory rates, slabs and limits change often and differ by state. X keeps them as dated data with the official source for each value. A value that has not been checked yet is never used quietly:
- if a value is missing or unchecked, that item is not computed, and the run says so;
- if a documented default is used while the official figure is confirmed, the item is computed and the run, the payslip and the explanation show a warning.
What payroll does with them
- Employee shares (PF, ESI, PT, LWF, TDS) are deducted on the payslip.
- Employer shares (employer PF, EPS, EDLI and admin charges, employer ESI, employer LWF) are shown as Paid by employer, not part of net pay.
- The wage register lists each person's amounts for the month. See Salary and wage registers.
Questions
Why does PF say "Not available yet"?
PF rates and limits are data. Until every value in force has been checked against the official source, payroll does not compute PF and says so, rather than guess.
Does X deposit PF or submit returns for me?
No. X works out the amounts and shows them on payslips and registers. You pay and submit on the government portals yourself.
